Which headphones
for a real journey ?

The binaural beat is born of two separate sounds — one in each ear. Without true stereo, it simply doesn't exist. Here's how to choose, honestly, without breaking the bank.

It's the question we get asked most, and it's a fair one: Murmura repeats "put your headphones on, both of them" at the start of every session. Why so insistent? Because the heart of the experience literally depends on it.

The binaural beat is built inside your brainstem, from two slightly different frequencies received separately — one per ear. A loudspeaker blends the two sounds in the air before they reach you: the illusion collapses. So the one non-negotiable hardware condition is this: headphones, in true stereo.

The only rule

Left ≠ right. As long as each ear gets its own channel, the journey works. The rest — wired or wireless, over-ear or in-ear — is only a matter of comfort, not effectiveness.

Three good choices

Depending on how you listen

There is no single "best" headphone — there's the one that suits you. Here are three honest profiles. Each one does the job beautifully; choose according to your body and your moment.

The safest bet

A wired stereo headset

The binaural beat REQUIRES two separate channels — a distinct sound in each ear. Wired guarantees perfect stereo, with no compression or delay. It’s the choice that cannot betray the session.

Ideal for listening seated, headset well settled, with no battery to worry about.

For lying down

Comfortable in-ear earphones

Most journeys are lived lying down, eyes closed. A bulky headset presses your ear against the pillow. Flat, light in-ears let your head rest — the stereo stays clean, the comfort follows the body.

Ideal in bed, on your side, to slip toward the threshold of sleep.

Wireless, if you insist

A low-latency wireless pair

Wireless frees you from the cable, but any Bluetooth adds a delay. For a guided voice and a slow beat, it stays tolerable — aim for a recent model (low-latency codec) and keep both earpieces well synced.

Ideal for moving around, meditating seated, or simply hating wires.

The trap to avoid

What doesn't matter (as much as you'd think)

Price, the latest noise cancellation, spectacular bass: none of it improves the binaural beat. No headphone makes it "stronger" — it only lets it exist. A decent model is more than enough.

What truly matters comes down to two things: a real left/right separation, and a comfort that lets you forget you're wearing anything. The day you stop feeling your headphones, you're ready to go.

Reminder: binaural separation (two channels) is the condition for the phenomenon — Oster, G., Scientific American, 1973.

Our pact

We only recommend what truly serves the experience. Headphones are the only tool genuinely required for a Murmura journey — that's why we talk about them honestly, without pushing you toward the priciest. To offer you something beautiful, built on what's real.
